Sweden and Norway dominate sprints but Canada gets three top-10 finishes

CANMORE, Alta. – Sweden and Norway won the men’s and women’s 1.3-kilometre free sprint races at the Alberta World Cup cross-country skiing competition while Canada put forward its best effort of the season.

Canada placed three skiers in the top 10, including Chandra Crawford of Canmore who was the only Canadian to make the final before finishing sixth.

Toronto’s Len Valjas ended up with a seventh place finish while the surprise of the day came from 23-year-old Jesse Cockney, also of Canmore.

Cockney was leading his semifinal but got boxed in and ended up ninth for his best finish ever at the World Cup.

Sweden’s Emil Joennson crossed the finish line in 2:31.12 followed by Anders Gloeersen of Norway and Nekita Kriukov of Russia.

Maiken Caspersen of Norway turned in a time of 2:59.78 followed by Kikkan Randall of the United States and Celine Brun-Lie of Norway.
