Gryphons defeat Thunderbirds 2-1 at CIS field hockey championship

VICTORIA – Moon Weijens scored a late tie-breaking goal to lift the Guelph Gryphons over the four-time defending national champion UBC Thunderbirds 2-1 on Thursday in round-robin action at the CIS women’s field hockey championship.

Weijens goal came on a penalty corner at the 60-minute mark of the match. Olivia Lane opened the scoring for fourth-seeded Guelph in the sixth minute.

Gryphons netminder Morgan Kelley earned the win.

Third-ranked UBC tied the game in the second half with a goal from freshman Niki Best in the 44th minute.

In other round-robin play, the host Victoria Vikes downed the Toronto Varsity Blues.

Kathleen Leahy scored three goals for Victoria while Lizzie Yates rounded out the attack.

Nicole Woodcroft had the lone goal for Toronto.
