Nunavut minister resigns after losing non-confidence vote

IQALUIT, Nunavut – Nunavut’s family services minister is stepping down after other members of the legislature delivered a vote of non-confidence in her work on the weekend.

Jeannie Ugyuk is also resigning her seat in the legislature.

Ugyuk lost the confidence vote during the mid-term leadership review.

That’s when backbench members of the legislature vote on the performance of the premier and cabinet.

Such votes are a feature of Nunavut’s consensus-style government.

Premier Peter Taptuna survived the vote and will continue on for the rest of his term.
