Hit-and-run driver who killed woman gets two and a half years behind bars

VERNON, B.C. – The parents of a woman who died after she was struck on a road near Vernon, B.C., say they accept the sentence given to the hit-and-run driver.

Twenty-nine-year-old Chase Donaldson has been handed a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for dangerous driving causing death and failing to remain at the scene.

The judge ruled Donaldson was racing when he hit and killed 22-year-old Kiera-Leigh Carlson in April 2010 and said there must be a clear message that such conduct won’t be tolerated.

Donaldson apologized for his actions in court Friday, but the victim’s mother, Bev Carlson, says that won’t make up for her loss.

She says Donaldson has no idea what she’s endured since her 22-year-old daughter was killed.

Donaldson’s lawyers say the sentence was in the range of what they expected but they haven’t ruled out an appeal. (CKIZ)
