Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole to star onstage together in Chicago in ‘War Paint’

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Chicago has landed a musical with enough talent to make Broadway blush: Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole starring in a show about makeup pioneers by the team that created “Grey Gardens.”

The Goodman Theatre said Thursday that it will produce the world premiere of “War Paint,” about the arch-rivalry of cosmetics entrepreneurs Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden. LuPone will play Rubinstein and Ebersole plays Arden.

“Next to Normal” director Michael Greif will direct, composer Scott Frankel and lyricist Michael Korie will create the score, and “play I Am My Own Wife” playwright Doug Wright will supply the book. All four men last teamed up on “Grey Gardens.”

The new musical is inspired by the book “War Paint” by Lindy Woodhead and the documentary film, “The Powder & the Glory” by Ann Carol Grossman and Arnie Reisman. The show starts June 28.

LuPone earned two Tony Awards for “Evita” and “Gypsy,” while Ebersole won one of her two Tonys for her dual performance as Edith Beale and Little Edie Beale in “Grey Gardens.”
