NCAA selects Lauren Hill, O.J. Brigance as new Inspiration Award recipients

INDIANAPOLIS – Former CFL linebacker O.J Brigance and the late Lauren Hill were selected as this year’s NCAA Inspiration Award winners.

They will be honoured at January’s annual convention.

Hill was diagnosed with inoperable brain tumour during her senior year of high school but decided to attend Division III Mount St. Joseph and play basketball even though doctors gave her only a year to live. She played in four games and scored 10 points before she was too weak to continue. Hill died in April.

Brigance, who played for the B.C. Lions from 1991-’93 and won a Grey Cup with the Baltimore Stallions in 1995, was a leader on Rice’s football team before going to the CFL. Eventually, he played seven seasons in the NFL and won a Super Bowl with Baltimore.

In 2007, he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease. Now 46, he does consulting work with the Ravens.
