Fraud trial for former Montreal mayor Michael Applebaum to begin this November
MONTREAL – Former Montreal mayor Michael Applebaum’s fraud trial will begin this fall.
Applebaum was hoping for a stay of proceedings and was arguing the scheduled date for the trial to get going — September 2017 — was too far down the road.
On Tuesday, Quebec court Judge Robert Marchi brought the trial forward to this November.
Applebaum was arrested in June 2013 on various fraud-related charges linked to alleged real-estate bribery when he was mayor of the borough of Cote-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grace.
He was mayor of Montreal between November 2012 and June 2013.
In originally seeking the stay of proceedings, Applebaum argued he was finding it difficult to earn a living as a real-estate agent because of the 14 criminal charges he faces.
