Spain’s top court once again blocks Catalan breakaway moves
MADRID – Spain’s top court has acted to block an attempt by pro-independence parties in Catalonia to move ahead with their secession plans in defiance of a previous ruling.
The constitutional Court announced Monday it has suspended a Catalan Parliament resolution, passed last week, which set out a road map to independence. The five-month suspension is the first step toward possible fines and legal proceedings against members of the Barcelona-based parliament.
The resolution was approved by the “Together for Yes” group and its anti-capitalist governing coalition partner CUP, despite protests from opposition parties that it was illegal.
The regional government’s strategy for independence by 2017 was approved last year but ruled unconstitutional by the constitutional Court.
Catalonia accounts for nearly a fifth of Spain’s economic output.
