Carnegie Hero Fund honours 18 for acts of selfless courage
PITTSBURGH – A teenager who went into a burning home to save his 23-month-old nephew is among 16 Americans and two Canadians being recognized for putting their lives at risk during acts of heroism.
The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission on Tuesday announced the latest recipients of the Carnegie medals for heroism. The winners or their survivors will also receive grants.
The honorees include 17-year-old Brent Rudy Edwards, who collapsed from smoke inhalation after carrying his nephew to safety from a Philadelphia house fire last year. He was treated and recovered.
The award was endowed by the late steel magnate and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, who was inspired by stories of selfless heroism during a deadly coal mine disaster.
The commission has given more than $40 million to more than 10,000 people since 1904.
