Kellogg Foundation grant to boost Motown Museum programs

DETROIT – The Motown Museum is using a $1.5 million grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to boost community programming in concert with its planned expansion.

The Detroit-based museum and Battle Creek-based philanthropic organization announced the grant Monday. Officials say the money can help the museum broaden programs, such as summer camps and spoken word poetry and singing contests.

Foundation officials say Detroit is a key place for its philanthropic efforts, which focuses on supporting children, working families and equitable communities. They add the grant helps to revitalize a historic neighbourhood, elevate its residents’ voices and provide career development opportunities.

Motown Museum, where the 60-year-old Motown Records once operated and artists recorded, announced expansion plans in 2016. The project includes interactive exhibits, performance and recording spaces and expanded retail and meeting spaces.
