B.C. changes liquor rules for catered events like outdoor weddings

VANCOUVER – The B.C. government is changing the rules to allow catering companies to get a liquor licences for events like outdoor weddings.

The changes will also apply to restaurants, hotels, and conference centres when liquor is served at catered events outside their establishments.

Until now, people hosting an event and serving liquor needed to get a special occasion licence, take a course and accept liability for liquor service at the event.

Under the new rules, catering companies can take over these responsibilities.

Energy Minister Rich Coleman, who’s in charge of liquor, says the changes will help the catering industry and boost B.C.’s tourism appeal.

Mark von Schellwitz of the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association says this will reducered tape and help the hospitality industry provide better service to people who have events outside of hotels, restaurants and halls.
