Toronto FC to clarify future of captain Torsten Frings’ at news conference

The future of Torsten Frings will be clarified today.

The 36-year-old Toronto FC captain has been missing in action recently, attending to a personal matter away from training camp, according to the MLS team.

There has been speculation the team might buy out the contract of the former German international whose season was cut shot last year by hip surgery. Or that he will simply retire.

Toronto FC has scheduled a major announcement for 11 a.m. ET

Frings had one year left on his contract, saying earlier this month that he wanted to finish that out before engaging on a coaching career.

Toronto has a ready-made replacement for Frings in Brazilian defensive midfielder Julio Cesar.
