Court appearance for suspect in deaths of Alberta father, child

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – A man accused of killing a two-year-old girl and her father is to make an appearance in a southern Alberta courtroom today.

Derek Saretzky is charged with first-degree murder in the September deaths of Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette and her father Terry Blanchette.

Saretzky is also charged with committing an indignity to the little girl’s body.

He was found fit to stand trial after a psychiatric examination last December.

Saretzky was arrested in the Crowsnest Pass in southwestern Alberta after Blanchette, 27, was found dead in his Blairmore home on Sept. 14.

A widespread Amber Alert was issued for Hailey, whose remains were discovered in a rural area the next day.

Alberta Justice says today’s appearance is to set a date for a preliminary hearing and to address bail.
