Dancevic to face Monfils in Canada’s Davis Cup opener vs. France

POINTE-A-PITRE, Guadeloupe – Frank Dancevic will open for Canada’s tennis team against Gael Monfils in their Davis Cup first round tie versus France.

The Canadians are missing their top singles player as Milos Raonic is sidelined by a torn abductor muscle. Doubles specialist Daniel Nestor also won’t play because of a family matter.

Dancevic, from Niagara Falls, Ont., plays world No. 17 Monfils in the opening singles match, according to Thursday’s draw.Vasek Pospisil of Vancouver will face Gilles Simon in the second singles match.

Philip Bester of Vancouver and Pospisil will play Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet in the doubles rubber.

There will be two reverse singles matches Sunday.

French Davis Cup captain Yannick Noah picked Monfils despite the player’s criticism of the decision to play overseas. Monfils questioned playing in Guadeloupe because of the logistics involved but made clear he was thrilled to play for his country.
