Man gets 6 months for gun used by Boston Marathon bombers
BOSTON – A Massachusetts man who at one time was in possession of the gun that the Boston Marathon bombers used to kill a police officer has been sentenced to six months in prison.
Merhawi Berhe (muhr-HAW’-ee burr-HEE’), of Cambridge, Massachusetts, also was ordered to serve two years of supervised release.
Berhe pleaded guilty in March to possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. He was sentenced Tuesday in federal court in Boston.
Prosecutors say 22-year-old Berhe gave the gun to another man, who later gave it to convicted marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR’ tsahr-NEYE’-ehv.)
Tsarnaev and his older brother, Tamerlan (TAM’-ehr-luhn), used the gun several days after the April 2013 finish line bombings to kill Massachusetts Institute of Technology officer Sean Collier in an attempt to steal his weapon.
