Anchorage didn’t use snow sent from Fairbanks for Iditarod
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Quite possibly the most famous freight shipment ever to travel the rails from Fairbanks to Anchorage wound up going straight to the dump.
Snow was shipped last week after persistently warm temperatures left Anchorage streets bare ahead of the ceremonial start of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race last Saturday.
The Alaska Dispatch News reports (http://is.gd/g7toyE) city manager Mike Abbott told Anchorage Assembly members Tuesday while it was a nice gesture, it wasn’t needed.
The ceremonial course was shortened to three miles from 11, and the city had enough snow stored to cover that.
Plus, he says they found rocks and other material in the 350 cubic yards of Fairbanks snow. A railroad spokesman says he was surprised to hear that since the snow came straight from the railroad’s yard in Fairbanks.
