Penticton city council asked to support recall legislation

PENTICTON – A request by Penticton resident Elvena Slump and Helen Trevors at a recent Committee of the Whole meeting regarding recall legislation returns to council tomorrow.

Staff are recommending council request the province to include recall legislation for local government elected officials upon review and recommendation of an independent integrity commissioner at the Tuesday. Feb. 20 council meeting.

The request would be put forward in a resolution presented at the Southern Interior Local Government Association for consideration at the Union of BC Municipalities convention later this year.

Slump and Trevors submitted the request after appearing as a delegation before the Committee of the Whole on Feb. 7.

City council’s focus will be on the budget this week, with only a handful of items being dealt with in this week’s regular council meeting.

Council will be looking giving first reading to a new zoning bylaw for the city, replacing the existing bylaw which has been in effect since 2011.

Council is expected to endorse changes intended to clear up inconsistencies and increase clarity and useablilty of the bylaw, where possible.

Council will also be asked to give first reading prior to a March 7 public hearing on a zoning amendment for 4000 Valleyview Road to change the property from agricultural to country residential.

Finally, council will be asked to consider how much consultation is necessary prior to allowing an official community plan amendment for 850 Wiltse Boulevard. The amendment would rezone portions of 850 Wiltse Blvd. from multi-family to low density residential.
