Prosecutor: 2 Virginia officers justified in fatal shooting

NORFOLK, Va. – Prosecutors say no charges will be filed against two officers who fatally shot a man who killed a police sergeant.

The Virginian-Pilot reports Commonwealth’s Attorney Greg Underwood sent a letter Tuesday to Norfolk Police Chief Larry Boone saying Officers Jesse Amos and Arturo Garcia were justified in firing their shotguns at 39-year-old Tyson Chad Williams in July.

Officers had surrounded a vacant apartment as Williams hid with two weapons. Authorities say he was high on methamphetamine and believed his estranged wife had hired someone to kill him.

During the standoff, Williams shot a sergeant who had rigged a body cam to survey the apartment. He survived. Less than 30 minutes later, Williams rushed toward police and didn’t obey commands to stop, leading to the shooting.
