REGINA – The Saskatchewan Roughriders signed Canadian running back Matt Walter on Thursday.
The five-foot-10, 215-pound Walter spent the last four seasons with the Calgary Stampeders. He played in 59 career regular-season games — 14 being starts — and rushed for 1,264 yards on 237 carries (5.3-yard average) with four TDs.
Walter, 26, a Calgary native, added 28 catches for 217 yards. He also appeared in eight playoff games, helping the Stampeders win the 2014 Grey Cup.
“Matt has proven to be a versatile running back through his first four seasons in the CFL,” Saskatchewan head coach/GM Chris Jones said in a statement. “He is a powerful young guy and proven winner that will help our national depth and give us options in the backfield and value on special teams.”
The Stampeders selected Walter in the fourth round, No. 34 overall, in the 2011 CFL draft from the University of Calgary.
