B.C. Transit recommends West Kelowna cancel two bus routes

WEST KELOWNA – Two West Kelowna bus routes could be terminated following a tonight's city council meeting.

B.C. Transit is recommending the 27 Horizon and 29 Bear Creek Routes be terminated due to low ridership.

Less than three people board buses on those routes per trip, according to B.C. Transit, compared to the 97 Okanagan route which boards just under 27 people per trip.

Since June 2014, the City of West Kelowna has been working with B.C. Transit to review current routes for the Transit Future Action Plan. The plan is scheduled to be finished by this summer. 

B.C. Transit recommends the money saved from terminating these routes should be put towards improving current high traffic routes, as well as off-peak services.

Transit officials say the city should provide additional off peak service on the 97 RapidBus route specifically, while providing weekday coverage to the Shannon Lake and Tallus areas, and summer service routes to the lakefront area in Gellatly.

Public engagement events will be held during the week of March 13 to March 18.
