Quebec Liberals accusing PQ of cronyism with liquor-board appointment

QUEBEC – The Quebec Liberals are accusing the Parti Quebecois government of political cronyism after the appointment of a former PQ cabinet minister to a plum position.

The reason for the Liberal outrage is the government’s decision to name Sylvain Simard as head of the board of directors at the provincial liquor corporation.

Simard was a member of the legislature between 1994 and 2012 and a cabinet minister under premiers Lucien Bouchard and Bernard Landry.

He did not run in last year’s election campaign.

Lise Theriault, a Liberal member of the legislature, is accusing the government of repeatedly resorting to partisan appointments.

But Finance Minister Nicolas Marceau is defending the move, saying Simard getting the job has nothing to do with his political beliefs.
