KELOWNA – With the time change this weekend, the Kelowna Fire Department would like to remind residents to check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms when they change their clocks this weekend.
Daylight savings time takes place on Sunday, March 12 at 2 a.m. – when clocks should be set forward one hour.
“We would like to encourage everyone to take this opportunity to check their fire alarms as well,” says Fire & Life Safety Educator Rick Euper. “It saves lives. Investigations have shown that most fatal fires are due to a smoke alarm that didn’t activate because of dead or missing batteries, or because there were no alarms in place.”
If your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are battery operated, change the batteries, and don’t forget to check the date on your alarms – if they are ten years or older the alarms will need to be replaced.
If you have any questions about checking and changing the batteries in your alarms, please contact the Kelowna Fire Department at 250-469-8788.
