Homeless man guilty of murder in stabbing death of 15-year-old boy

VICTORIA – A 42-year-old homeless man has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the stabbing of a 15-year old boy in Victoria.

Cory Barry was charged after Justin Wendland was stabbed twice in the chest without provocation at a bus stop outside the Times Colonist newspaper building in 2010.

In convicting Barry, a Supreme Court judge found the defence failed to prove the man suffered from a mental disorder to the point where he should be found not criminally responsible.

The question of whether Barry was mentally capable of understanding the severity of his actions played a key part in the trial.

But the judge ruled Barry understood that death was a likely outcome when he forcefully stabbed Wendland twice in the chest.

Barry will be sentenced later. (CFAX)
