Lake Erie Monsters left-winger Brett Gallant collapses on bench during game

TORONTO – Left-winger Brett Gallant collapsed on the Lake Erie bench in the first period of the Monsters’ 4-3 overtime loss to the Toronto Marlies on Friday in American Hockey League action.

The Summerside, P.E.I., native was attended to by medical staff and was alert and talking after being stretchered off from the bench. An ambulance took him to a local hospital.

Mark Arcobello had the power-play winner for Toronto (51-15-5), while Connor Brown, Ben Smith and Colin Smith all scored in regulation. Antoine Bibeau made 31 saves for the Marlies sixth consecutive win.

Alex Broadhurst, Michael Paliotta and Mark Cundari supplied the offence for the Monsters (39-21-22). Anton Forsberg stopped 28 shots for Lake Erie.

Toronto went 2 for 5 on the power play and the Monsters were 0 for 2.

Gallant has an assist and 149 penalty minutes with a minus-9 rating in 47 games with Lake Erie this season.
