Residents worried over cruise tourism OK terminal’s purchase
BAR HARBOR, Maine – Residents concerned over the growth of cruise tourism in Maine have allowed their town to purchase a vacant ferry terminal.
The Portland Press Herald reports that Bar Harbor residents voted 1,380 to 213 to approve the town’s $3.5 million purchase of the 4.5 acre property from the State Department of Transportation.
The Tuesday vote follows concerns that the vacant terminal could be developed into a large cruise ship pier long requested by major cruise lines.
A plan by town officials to do just that met public resistance.
A citizens’ committee instead recommended adding a marina and a landing for cruise ship tenders to reduce passenger congestion on the downtown waterfront.
