Luongo gets nod to start for Canucks against Sharks in opening playoff game
VANCOUVER – Roberto Luongo will start in goal for the Vancouver Canucks tonight in the opening game of their first-round playoff series with the San Jose Sharks.
Luongo got the call in place of Cory Schneider, who suffered an undisclosed injury in the last week of the regular season against Chicago. Coach Alain Vigneault says Schneider is not still not healthy enough to play.
The start added another chapter to an intriguing season for Luongo, who was expected to be traded in the off-season after Schneider displaced him as Vancouver’s No. 1 goaltender in last spring’s opening-round playoff loss to the Los Angeles Kings.
Rookie Joe Cannata will back up Luongo, even though Schneider took part in Vancouver’s morning skate.
