Canada sending $2 million to help NGOs deal with Syrian refugees in Jordan

OTTAWA – Canada is contributing $2 million to help Syrian refugees who are flooding into Jordan.

The money is intended to help a number of non-governmental organizations provide humanitarian assistance for the refugees.

The Harper government says that includes access to shelter, food, water and emergency health services, as well as protection, education, and livelihood assistance.

The latest contribution will also pay for a Canadian expert to work with UNICEF in dealing with the refugees.

Since January 2012, Canada has provided more than $48 million for humanitarian assistance in Syria and neighbouring countries.

The uprising in Syria has caused massive displacement within the country and forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee to neighbouring countries.
