OTTAWA – New Democrat MP Charlie Angus is asking Senate ethics officer Lyse Ricard to investigate a gift of $90,000 that Conservative Sen. Mike Duffy received from the prime minister’s chief of staff.
Angus, the NDP’s ethics critic, says the gift from Nigel Wright may have breached several Senate rules.
The Prime Minister’s Office has acknowledged that Wright wrote a personal cheque to Duffy to cover the senator’s repayment of improper housing expense claims.
Angus has written to Richard to outline his concerns that Duffy is in breach of the Senate’s conflict of interest code.
He also says the arrangement may have violated the Parliament of Canada Act.
Angus is also asking the government to call an independent investigation into the matter.
