Worst over for Newfoundland as Andrea swirls out to sea

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – The remnants of tropical storm Andrea unleashed heavy rain on parts of Newfoundland this weekend before swirling out to sea, but spared the island from the soaking it handed the Maritimes on Saturday.

The storm dumped at least 60 millimetres of rain in many parts of the Maritime provinces and was blamed for knocking out power to thousands of customers.

New Brunswick’s Grand Manan Island reported more than 90 millimetres.

By Saturday night, Andrea had moved onto southern Newfoundland.

The Canadian Hurricane Centre in Halifax says the highest rainfall amount was reported in Winterland on the Burin Peninsula, which received about 55 millimetres.

On the Avalon Peninsula, more than 42 millimetres fell in Argentia, while the capital city of St. John’s received about 26 millimetres.

The Bonavista and Avalon peninsulas were reporting only light to moderate rainfall as of early today.

The centre says Andrea is not expected to have any more impact over land, though marine gale warnings remain in effect for waters southeast of Newfoundland.
