Canada-U.S. travel down both ways in April, overseas travel up: StatsCan

OTTAWA – Statistics Canada says travel between Canada and the United States decreased in both directions in April, while travel between Canada and overseas countries increased.

It says American residents took 1.6 million trips to Canada in April, down 4.0 per cent compared with March.

Canadian residents took 4.6 million trips to the United States in April, down 2.6 per cent from March.

While travel by Canadian residents to the United States declined, travel to overseas countries from Canada rose 2.7 per cent from March to 798,000 trips.

Travel to Canada from overseas rose 0.6 per cent in April to 394,000 trips.

In April, seven of the top 12 overseas markets recorded increases in travel to Canada, with the largest percentage gain, 4.3 per cent, recorded in travel from Hong Kong.
