In this photo by Mahesh Kumar A., an artist puts the final touches on an elaborate idol of the Hindu elephant-headed god Ganesha for a festival marking his birthday. Across western and southern India idols of the god are purchased and brought home, where they are worshipped. After a few days — every family has its own tradition — the idols are carried to a large body of water and ceremonially immersed. The festival started Monday.
