Canadian mission in Dhaka to close Sunday, says Foreign Ministry spokesman

OTTAWA – Canada’s mission in Dhaka, Bangladesh, will be closed on Sunday amid a widespread U.S. travel alert in the region.

A spokesman for the Foreign Minister says the Dhaka mission will close as a security precaution and events will be monitored closely.

The threat of a terrorist attack led to the weekend closure of 21 U.S. embassies and consulates in the Muslim world and a global travel warning to Americans.

It marks the first such alert since an announcement before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 strikes.

Canada’s Foreign Minister John Baird had said on Friday there were no plans to close any Canadian missions in the region.

But he did urge diplomats and Canadian travellers to exercise added caution and said his officials would be monitoring events throughout the weekend.
