CIS Football: Gee-Gees score winning touchdown in 2OT to get past Gryphons

OTTAWA – Trevor Kennedy caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Derek Wendel in double overtime as the Ottawa Gee-Gees edged the Guelph Gryphons 31-28 on Saturday afternoon in Canadian Interuniversity Sport football action.

It was Wendel’s third touchdown pass of the day and he finished 29-of-50 passing for 286 yards and two interceptions.

Bryce Vieira ran for 113 yards on 16 carries for the No. 8 Gee-Gees (3-0) while Mitchell Baines had 11 receptions for 120 yards.

James Roberts completed 25-of-40 passes for 225 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for Guelph (2-2).

Ottawa’s Lewis Ward kicked a 51-yard field goal with 53 seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie it 22-22 and send the game to extra time.

Ward got the Gee-Gees on the board first in overtime before Guelph’s Gabriel Ferraro hit two-straight field goals to give the Gryphons a 28-25 advantage.

TORONTO — Marcus Hobbs ran for 70 yards and three touchdowns while completing 7-of-12 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns as Toronto (1-3) routed cross-town rival York (2-2).

KINGSTON, Ont. — Alex Taylor ran for 198 yards on 32 carries and Marc Liegghio kicked three field goals as No. 5 Western (3-1) spoiled Queen’s (0-3) home opener.
