ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – A look at Ches Crosbie, leader of the Newfoundland and Labrador Progressive Conservatives:

Age: 65.

Early years: Born in and raised in St. John’s, N.L., Crosbie comes from a political household. His father John Crosbie served as a federal cabinet minister and later as lieutenant-governor of the province.

Education: He studied political science at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont., and went on to study law at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He continued his law studies at Dalhousie University in Halifax.

Career: He formed his own law firm in 1991 and led several high-profile class action lawsuits, including one involving survivors of Labrador residential schools suing the federal government. He was rejected as a federal Tory candidate in 2015 amid reported tension with then-PM Stephen Harper. Won the provincial PC leadership in April 2018.

Family: His wife Lois Hoegg is a justice of the Court of Appeal of Newfoundland and Labrador. The couple have three grown daughters, Charlotte, Catherine and Rachel.
