Governor general praises spirit of Alberta town deluged by flooding
HIGH RIVER, Alta. – Governor General David Johnston met with first responders in the Alberta town of High River, then walked through the flood-ravaged community’s downtown.
Johnston stopped to talk to the owner of the Pioneer Barber Shoppe, which has a sign promising it will reopen soon.
He promised to come back for a trim when it was back in business.
The governor general praised the people of High River for their community spirit before presenting the town with his commendation for outstanding service.
High River Mayor Emile Blokland promised the community will eventually return to its original condition but says it could be another four or five years.
About 60 per cent of High River, including the downtown, were under water in June’s floods.
