Maple Leafs’ Lupul makes training camp debut after dealing with back injury

TORONTO – Joffrey Lupul skated with his Maple Leafs teammates for the first time this training camp after being held out because of back spasms.

Lupul took part in Wednesday’s practice after a full day off for the team. The winger did line rushes with Tyler Bozak and Phil Kessel and did not appear to be limited at all.

Lupul had been skating at the Leafs’ practice facility before camp started but his back tightened up the day before he took his physical, coach Randy Carlyle said last week.

The team said Lupul’s status was day to day.

Lupul missed all but 16 games last season with a broken right arm and a concussion. He’s entering the first season of a US$26.25-million, five-year contract signed in January.

Enforcer Colton Orr (leg bone bruise) remained off the ice.
