Investigators return to scene of fatal Park Police shooting

FORT HUNT, Va. – Seven months after it occurred, FBI investigators returned Thursday to the scene of a fatal police shooting that began with a chase on a northern Virginia highway.

Authorities closed several roads in the Fort Hunt section of Fairfax County while the FBI conducted police work in the location where Bjian Ghaisar, 25, of McLean was shot and killed by U.S. Park Police in November.

Police initiated a chase of Ghaisar on the George Washington Memorial Parkway after he left the scene of a minor accident. Dashboard video shows police shooting Ghaisar after he started to pull away from officers who approached his stopped car with guns drawn.

Ghaisar’s family says he was unarmed.

In a statement, Ghaisar’s family noted that more than 200 days have passed since the shooting but basic questions about what happened and whether officers will be charged remain unanswered.

“(T)he lack of any transparency and accountability around his killing or who did it has been devastating for our family — second only to the unimaginable anguish of losing him forever. We hope the events today are an indication of progress in the investigation and a step closer toward justice,” the statement said.

An FBI spokeswoman on Thursday confirmed that law-enforcement activity was occurring in the area but declined further comment.
