TORONTO – The Toronto Maple Leafs are locking up star forward Phil Kessel to a long-term contract extension.

A source tells The Canadian Press that the two sides have agreed to terms on an eight-year extension worth US$64 million.

Kessel had 20 goals and 32 assists for the Maple Leafs over last season’s 48-game schedule.

He has 379 points (185-194) in 504 regular-season games over seven seasons with Toronto and Boston.

The 26-year-old right-winger was drafted by the Bruins with the fifth overall pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

He was dealt to Toronto four years ago for two first-round picks and a second-round selection. The Bruins used the picks to draft Tyler Seguin, Dougie Hamilton and Jared Knight.
