Air France workers on trial for assaulting executives
BOBIGNY, France – Air France union members are facing trial over a violent protest against job cuts that left two executives fleeing under police cover with their shirts ripped off.
The incident last year shocked many and embarrassed the government, a big Air France shareholder.
The trial Friday has taken on new importance amid nationwide strikes and blockades over a bill extending the workweek and making layoffs easier. The CGT union plans protests to support those on trial.
Air France has shrunk its workforce over years of restructuring amid competition from low-cost and Mideast airlines.
The October protest erupted when management said more cuts were needed. The protesters targeted the Air France human resources chief and head of long-haul operations.
Five people were charged with assault.
