ELMSDALE, N.S. – Nova Scotia Liberal Leader Stephen McNeil says his promise to make it easier for private renewable energy producers to sell electricity would be among his priorities if he wins Tuesday’s election.

McNeil says the plan to break Nova Scotia Power’s monopoly on electricity generation would allow for greater competition and make power rates more affordable.

Speaking in Elmsdale just outside Halifax, McNeil said a Liberal government would also quickly launch a review of the tax system and call a public inquiry into alleged abuse at the Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children.

McNeil is in the middle of a weekend tour where he is aiming to visit 46 of the province’s 51 ridings before the vote.

At a park in downtown Halifax, Progressive Conservative Leader Jamie Baillie said the Liberals have shown that they are too similar to the NDP and don’t have a plan to balance the budget nor reduce power rates.

NDP Premier Darrell Dexter is visiting ridings in Cape Breton.
