The Latest: Man killed in gunfire exchange with deputy IDed

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Latest on an exchange of gunfire that killed one man and critically wounded a sheriff’s deputy in Maryland (all times local):

11:15 a.m.

Maryland State Police have identified the man fatally shot in an exchange of gunfire with an Eastern Shore sheriff’s deputy, who was critically wounded.

Police spokesman Greg Shipley identified the man as 52-year-old James Rich II of Chestertown.

Police say deputies responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at Rich’s home, but Rich and his girlfriend were gone when deputies arrived. The woman’s father took her to the sheriff’s headquarters and after midnight, Deputy 1st Class Warren Hogan escorted the woman to the home to collect some belongings. Police say the woman and Rich began to argue, then Rich got a shotgun and fired one shot. Police say he moved toward Hogan and they exchanged gunfire. Both were struck.

Sheriff Gary Hoffman says Hogan was hit below his body armour.

Hogan is in critical condition after surgery, but Hoffman says it looks like he in good spirits.

8:45 a.m.

Authorities say a man has died after exchanging gunfire with a sheriff’s deputy who was also shot at a home on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley said in an email Thursday that the man died at a hospital. He didn’t identify the man.

Queen Anne’s County sheriff’s office spokesman Dale Patrick said in a statement that deputies were called Wednesday to a domestic disturbance at a Chestertown home. After midnight, the woman in the incident showed up at the sheriff’s department’s headquarters.

When Deputy 1st Class Warren Hogan escorted her home to collect belongings, Patrick says a man fired at Hogan, who returned fire. Both were struck.

Patrick says Hogan is in critical condition after surgery.

Patrick says Hogan is white and the man was black.
