Most actively traded companies on the TSX, TSX Venture Exchange markets

TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Wednesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (13,455.33 up 14.72 points):

Kinross Gold Corp. (TSX:K). Miner. Up 20 cents, or 3.70 per cent, at $5.60 on 6.37 million shares. The gold sector led the advancers on the main index, up 1.98 per cent at 188.16 points as the price of the bullion climbed US$3.80 to $1,349.30 per ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

B2Gold Corp. (TSX:BTO). Miner. Down three cents, or 1.10 per cent, at $2.69 on 6.15 million shares. The stock closed lower for a second day in a row after surging Monday on news B2Gold will acquire Volta Resources Inc. (TSX:VTR) in an all-stock deal pegged at about US$63 million.

Barrick Gold Corp. (TSX:ABX). Miner. Up 84 cents, or 4.06 per cent, at $21.55 on 6.04 million shares.

Goldcorp (TSX:G). Miner. Up 15 cents, or 0.55 per cent, at $27.63 on 6.03 million shares.

Yamana Gold (TSX:YRI). Miner. Up 49 cents, or 4.79 per cent, at $10.71 on 5.70 million shares. Weaker metal prices dragged Yamana’s third-quarter results compared with year-ago figures. Profits dropped to US$43.45 million or six cents per basic share compared with $59.97 million or eight cents per share in the same period last year while revenue fell 25 per cent to $456.68 million.

Toronto Venture Exchange (964.17 down 4.27 points):

Midlands Minerals Corp. (TSXV:MEX). Mine exploration. Up half a cent, or 50 per cent, at 1.5 cents on 7.29 million shares.

Pacific Potash Corp. (TSXV:PP). Mine exploration. Down 4.5 cents, or 34.62 per cent, at 8.5 cents on 5.16 million shares.

Companies reporting major news:

Air Canada (TSX:AC.B). Airline. Up 22 cents, or four per cent, at $5.72 on 5.40 million shares. The carrier’s class B shares closed at a high not seen since mid 2008. The stock had been rising slowly for months, but jumped sharply in August when the airline’s second-quarter results beat analyst estimates.

Cameco Corp. (TSX:CCO). Miner. Up 87 cents, or 4.58 per cent, at $19.87 on 2.86 million shares. Its third-quarter net income and adjusted earnings soared, thanks to higher sales volumes and prices at its uranium business as well as lower exploration expenses. Cameco generated $211 million of net income in the July-September period, up from $79 million a year earlier while revenue doubled to $597 million.

Telus (TSX:T). Telecommunications. Up two cents, or 0.05 per cent, at $36.60 on 932,132 shares. Industry Canada rejected the telco’s second attempt to purchase financially-challenged wireless carrier Mobilicity. The federal government did not provide any reason for declining the deal. Last week, Ottawa gave Telus the go signal to buy Public Mobile.

Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN). Patent licensing. Up 20 cents, or 6.45 per cent, at $3.30 on 2.72 million shares. The company announced it is exploring a broad range of strategic alternatives in light of its current low share price which includes a possible sale of the company, a new dividend policy or other business models.
