Malawi: former justice minister arrested for alleged ties to shooting of budget director

BLANTYRE, Malawi – Police in Malawi say they have arrested a former justice minister suspected of involvement in the Sept. 13 shooting of the country’s budget director, a corruption fighter who was seriously injured and flown to South Africa for treatment.

Police spokesman Kelvin Maigwa said Friday that Ralph Kasambara, a former justice minister, was detained at his house on the previous night in Lilongwe, the capital. Another suspect turned himself over to police in a border district on Thursday.

Maigwa says no charges have yet been filed against the two.

President Joyce Banda has said the shooting of the budget director, Paul Mphwiyo, was linked to his efforts to fight corruption.
