Mexico’s president-elect and Guatemala’s president meet

MEXICO CITY – Mexico’s President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and Guatemala’s President Jimmy Morales say they plan to work together to develop their respective economies and reduce the need for their citizens to migrate.

Lopez Obrador will not take office until Dec. 1, but he gave a joint press conference with Morales Tuesday in Tuxtla Gutierrez, capital of the southern Mexican state of Chiapas.

Morales says they also spoke about security matters and working to reduce customs delays and speed commerce between their countries.

The United States has pressured Mexico to strengthen immigration enforcement along its southern border to stem the flow of Central American immigrants.

Lopez Obrador had already met with high-ranking officials from the United States and Canada during his transition, but Morales is the first foreign president.
