TS Earl set to re-enter Mexico after strengthening in Gulf

MEXICO CITY – Tropical Storm Earl gained strength again Friday after entering the Gulf of Mexico, and is predicted to hit Mexico’s Gulf coast and re-enter land.

Earlier forecasts had predicted Earl would weaken into a tropical depression, but new data showed it had regained wind speeds of 60 mph (95 kph).

Earl was moving west at 8 mph (13 kph) and was expected to hit land again late Friday near Alvarado, south of the port city of Veracruz, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

Isolated areas in the storm’s path could receive as much as 18 inches (45 centimetres), causing flooding and mudslides.

Mexico’s government issued a tropical storm warning for its southern Gulf coast from Tecolutla westward to Laguna Verde.

On Thursday, Earl slammed into the coast of the Caribbean nation of Belize with winds of 80 mph (130 kph), then weakened as it moved over Belize, northern Guatemala and southern Mexico, before entering the Gulf.
