Mark Rylance in Shakespeare’s plays ‘Twelfth Night’ and ‘Richard III’ recoup $3.1 million
NEW YORK, N.Y. – A double dose of Mark Rylance on Broadway has proved profitable — the two Shakespeare plays he’s in have recouped their investments.
Producers of “Twelfth Night” and “Richard III” said Thursday they have recouped their $3.1 million capitalization costs, despite having 250 seats at every performance sold for $25.
Two-time Tony Award-winning Rylance is the highlight of the Shakespeare’s Globe productions that made the jump from the West End. The productions opened in repertoire on Nov. 10.
The shows are performed by an all-male cast and seek to replicate how the plays were produced in Shakespeare’s day. Live musicians and candlelight are featured and the actors apply make-up on the stage before the shows.
Other recent show to recoup include “Pippin,” ”The Glass Menagerie” and “Kinky Boots.”
