Vatican studying papal trip to South Korea in August, Philippines-Sri Lanka in future

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis may go to South Korea in August.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said Wednesday that Francis has been invited to attend a meeting of young Asian Catholics and that a trip is under study.

He said the Vatican is also considering another papal trip to Asia, but not this year, to the Philippines and Sri Lanka.

Asked about reports that Francis might attend ceremonies in Sarajevo in June to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I, Lombardi said Francis has been invited to attend but that no decision has been made.

Francis so far has one foreign trip confirmed for 2014: a May 24-26 trip to Jordan, Israel and the West Bank.
