Acclaimed children’s author Kathi Appelt writing book about beloved dog

NEW YORK, N.Y. – A National Book Award finalist is writing a children’s story based on a real-life Labradoodle.

Atheneum Books for Young Readers announced Monday that in June it will publish Kathi Appelt’s “Mogie: The Heart of the House.” The book is based on a popular dog at a Ronald McDonald House in Houston. Marc Rosenthal will illustrate the book and a share of the proceeds is being donated to Ronald McDonald House, which provides support for critically ill children and their families.

Appelt is the author of more than 30 books. Her 2008 novel about an abandoned cat who befriends a bloodhound, “The Underneath,” was a National Book Award nominee and a runner-up for the Newbery prize.
