US couple sues Kentucky over same-sex marriage; Suit follows overturning of Virginia’s ban
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A Kentucky couple is suing the state seeking to force it to issue same-sex marriage licenses.
The lawsuit was filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Louisville.
It comes just two days after a federal judge mandated that the state recognize same-sex marriages from other states and countries, and a day after a judge in neighbouring Virginia overturned a voter-approved same-sex marriage ban.
The new Kentucky lawsuit raises the issue of whether the state should have to not only recognize out-of-state same-sex marriages, but allow them to take place in-state.
The suit comes amid a flurry of rulings and other legal activity as activists push more states to recognize gay marriages.
Marriage-equality cases are now active in 24 of the 33 states that do not allow same-sex marriage.
