Avalanche-control work to close B.C. highway for four hours Saturday

KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Avalanche-control work will force a four-hour closure of a major highway linking B.C.’s south coast and southern Interior on Saturday morning.

The Transportation Ministry says the closure of Coquihalla Highway 5 will begin at 7 a.m.

The closure will allow crews using helicopters to reduce the snowpack in avalanche paths and clean up any deposits that reach the highway.

Detours are available to motorists at Highway 1 at Kamloops and Hope, or via Highway 8 and Highway 1 at Merritt.

The ministry says it may periodically close other highways throughout the weekend because of avalanche control work.

Updates on highway and road conditions will be available on the DriveBC website.
